This air-based spell will let a mage create a telepathic bond to a small
creature. The creature will follow the mage's orders, inasmuch as they
do not interfere with its own nature: for example, a curious creature will
roam around to examine its surroundings. The larger or more intelligent
creatures cannot be bound by this spell. To be able to communicate with
your familiar, you must be standing, but you will continue perceiving the
world through its eyes even while you're asleep.
It is believed that many stories about talking animals stem from the ability
that a mage gains to speak through his familiar. A mage's familiar will not
be perceived by other animals as being a threat, thus allowing for the safe
exploration of hard-to-reach places, or the retrieval of lost items. To
get your familiar to do something, use the command 'order familiar'.
