There are many types of spells that affect an entire group, both offensively
and defensively. These spells come in two general types, group spells and
area attack spells- both with different modes of operation.

Group Spells:
Group spells affect the caster and everyone that is currently in the
caster's group. Usually, this will not include those members that are
not in the same room as the caster.

Area Attack Spells:
Area attack spells are combat spells that affect an entire group instead
of just a single target. The spell's targets depend upon the current
situation of the caster. If the caster is already in combat, the spell
will affect all the creatures that are currently fighting the caster or
the members of the caster's group. If the caster is not in combat, the
spell will affect all creatures in the room except the caster or the
members of the caster's party.

Note: area spells do not require a target, their affect is automatic.
